Sarah Muehlbauer spent her youth in Wisconsin, often outdoors and practicing athletics, particularly gymnastics. She headed into her college career as a fashion design major, but quickly refocused her major in the arts. This was also the time at which she discovered yoga, a transformative practice with profound psychological, spiritual, and health benefits, aiding her surgical recovery in 2004. As she progressed through undergrad, her passion for movement crept into her work through performance, as she began to stage movement for video, make sculptural costume, and experiment with different ways of using projection.
Wanting to continue accelerated growth, and fueled by some early encouragement (Muehlbauer was awarded the National Emerging Artist Award from VSA Arts in 2008), she moved to Philadelphia, entering graduate school at Tyler School of Art. Sarah spent her time collaborating with other artist, dancers, and sound designers, meanwhile falling in love with aerial arts—learning to perform on trapeze, rope, and fabric.
Following graduate school, Muehlbauer pursued her 200—hour Yoga Teacher Certification with Joan Hyman of YogaWorks. She continues her collaborative work professionally, directing projects and freelancing as an artist and performer. She works full time as a fabric dyer and teaches Aerial Yoga at Amrita Yoga and Wellness in Philadelphia.
